The SADP Tool (Search Active Device Protocol) is a network utility used to detect, configure, and manage CCTV devices on a local network. It is the standard tool used by security installers and IT teams to identify IP cameras, NVRs, and other surveillance equipment during initial setup or troubleshooting.
Once installed, SADP scans your local network and instantly lists every connected device — showing IP address, port, serial number, and activation status. You can then modify IP settings, activate devices, and assign admin credentials directly from the interface without needing to know each device's IP in advance.
What Is the SADP Tool Used For?
- Detect IP cameras and NVRs on a local network
- Modify IP addresses and subnet settings
- Activate and configure cameras and NVRs during installation
- Reset forgotten device passwords
- Troubleshoot connectivity and network conflicts
How to Use the SADP Tool
- Download and install the SADP Tool on a Windows PC connected to the same network as your cameras.
- Launch the application — it automatically scans the local network on startup. No configuration needed.
- Review detected devices — the tool lists all active devices with IP address, port, subnet mask, and activation status.
- Modify IP settings if needed — select a device and update its IP address to match your network plan. Enter admin credentials to confirm.
- Activate unactivated devices — new cameras ship inactive. Select inactive devices and assign an admin password to enable access.
- Verify connectivity — once configured, open the camera IP in a browser or add it to your NVR to confirm the setup is complete.
When Should You Use the SADP Tool?
During Installation
- Discovering cameras fresh out of the box
- Activating devices before adding to NVR
- Assigning IP addresses to match your network plan
- Confirming all cameras are online before handover
During Troubleshooting
- Camera disappeared from NVR — check if it's still on the network
- IP conflict — find and reassign duplicate addresses
- Forgot admin password — use SADP to export reset code
- New camera won't connect — confirm activation status
Limitations to Know
- Only works on the same local subnet as the cameras
- Does not work over VPN or across different VLANs
- Some third-party brands may not be detected
- For large multi-site setups, a cloud VMS is more practical
Common SADP Tool Issues and Fixes
Device Not Showing Up
- Confirm PC and camera are on same subnet
- Temporarily disable Windows Firewall
- Check physical cable connection or switch port
- Try running SADP as Administrator
Cannot Modify IP Address
- Device may already be activated — enter admin password
- Verify you have admin credentials for the device
- Check if device is in a different VLAN
Software Not Detecting Cameras
- Verify network cable and PoE power
- Confirm device compatibility (2M Technology, Hikvision, ONVIF)
- Disable VPN if active — VPNs block local broadcast
- Try a different network interface in SADP settings
Forgot Admin Password
- Use SADP to export a reset security code
- Submit code to manufacturer support for a reset key
- Contact 2M Technology — we can assist with supported devices
