Thermal Imaging Cameras Detecting Corona Virus

China

At the airports in China, they are using sensors and cameras to efficiently screen people. Using infrared sensors as heat scanners in camera systems won’t confirm if you have the virus but it will determine if you’re at risk. They manage this by detecting an individual’s body temperature at the entry point. It reveals this by using a camera and display. If the display reads that someone has a fever, then it can indicate you may have the virus. If this is shown further observations and testing can be done.

Turkey

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been using thermal cameras to detect coronavirus when he goes out in public. After case one of coronavirus was confirmed in Turkey, the president has put this in place. On March 5th, staff were monitoring the crowds around the president to detect fevers. A presidential official told everyone that they would be using thermal cameras in future public appearances. This was to protect Erdogan in his future public appearances.

Japan

Japan has created a system for body surface temperature screening with an alarm function. It was designed to detect flu symptoms like a fever at airports. It works by taking a thermal image, visual image, and an isothermal image to compare the temperatures. The images created show who is emitting a high temperature. This allows screeners to quickly isolate the passenger. This has recently been applied to check for coronavirus.

Thermal Cameras at Airports

Since past outbreaks, such as ebola, airports have become more strict about screenings. Although not every airport uses heat scanners every day. When there are outbreaks, thermal cameras can be useful. Also, they are safe as they do not release any hazardous radiation that can be harmful to human health. AI software can assist in screenings. This gives a way to help people screening identify people who are at risk for the virus. The cameras cannot detect the virus, they just detect high temperatures. A fever is a strong signal of a viral infection though and it is good to detect this early. The cameras are also contactless which can reduce the risk of the people screening coming in contact with the virus. They have proven to be effective and they provide a level of safety.

Infrared Light

Our bodies project heat in the way of infrared light. You can’t see it with the naked eye because it puts out at a different wavelength. On the electromagnetic spectrum, there’s a long-range of frequencies from low-frequency radio waves all the way up to high-frequency gamma rays. The more heat the body radiates, the more infrared light can be detected. There are sensors in thermal cameras that can detect the heat in a persons body and display it by color.

The color that shows up on the scanner is not visible in visible light. The color is to identify the temperature of the body. There are also computer algorithms that generate a color palette that represent the scale in temperature. The high temperatures show up as a different color to low temperatures. Creators made a color palette for average temperatures (98-100 degrees Fahrenheit). For high temperatures, a different temperature will appear to alert the screeners. If someone has a 98.6 Fahrenheit temperature, it will flash red for example. This lets screeners separate passengers who need additional screening. This is a lot quicker than testing everyone with a thermometer.

Thermal Cameras

The device that makes all of this possible is thermographic cameras. To use this feature, you can buy a thermographic camera. Thermographic cameras can sense wavelengths from 1,000nm to about 14,000nm. You have to buy these cameras at specialty electronic stores or online outlets. They are mostly used for research, scientific, industrial, and law enforcement purposes. The cameras that are available to consumers are infrared cameras. They can also connect to your smartphone via a USB connection using Android or iOS for operation.

Corona Virus Buster Dual-Sensor Thermal IP Camera 2MTIP- 8060

The above camera is a dual-sensor image and a thermal IP camera. It can help detect people passing by with high fevers. The best-proven way to avoid coronavirus has been through containment. Therefore, the thermal camera can point out anyone with a high fever who may have the virus. You can then pull them from a crowd and prevent spreading. You can install the software on any windows computer. The software connects cameras with multiple heat detection zones.
