What Is a Wing Turnstile?

A wing turnstile (also known as an optical flap turnstile or speed gate) is a modern access control solution that uses retractable or swinging glass barriers to regulate pedestrian entry. Unlike older mechanical gates, these turnstiles rely on advanced infrared sensors to track movement, detect tailgating, and ensure only one authorized person passes at a time. They are widely favored in corporate lobbies, high-end gyms, and government buildings because of their sleek aesthetics, fast throughput, and ADA compliance. Wing Turnstile vs. Other Turnstile Types

  • Wing turnstile vs. full-height turnstile — Wing turnstiles allow tailgating by a person who crouches under the barrier panels. Full-height turnstiles prevent this completely — used where absolute access control is required (prisons, high-security facilities). Wing turnstiles are appropriate where some human supervision exists.
  • Wing turnstile vs. tripod turnstile — Wing barriers open fully for ADA/wheelchair access and allow faster throughput in premium environments. Tripod turnstiles are more cost-effective and more durable in industrial settings.
  • Wing turnstile vs. lane drop-arm turnstile — While both wing and lane drop-arm models rely on advanced optical sensor technology, wing turnstiles offer a much stronger physical barrier. Drop-arm turnstiles leave open space underneath the single horizontal bar, creating a vulnerability where an intruder might attempt to crawl through. The flaps on wing turnstiles extend much closer to the ground to completely block the width of the lane and eliminate those gaps.

Installation and Integration
