What Is a Swing Turnstile?

A swing turnstile is a robust access control barrier that uses a motorized, swinging stainless steel arm or solid metal panel to regulate pedestrian entry. Unlike glass swing gates or optical wing turnstiles that rely on transparent acrylic flaps, these metal swing turnstiles are specifically designed for environments where durability and a stronger physical presence are required. They are fully motorized, meaning the stainless steel barrier automatically swings open upon credential authorization and closes smoothly after a person passes. Because they can be configured with wider lane clearances (up to 900 mm with brushless motors), swing turnstiles are an excellent ADA-compliant solution that easily accommodates wheelchairs, delivery carts, and strollers. They seamlessly integrate with standard biometric scanners, facial recognition panels, and traditional RFID card readers.

Swing Turnstile vs. Other Turnstile Types

  • Swing turnstile vs. full-height turnstile — Swing turnstiles allow tailgating by a person who crouches under the barrier panels. Full-height turnstiles prevent this completely — used where absolute access control is required (prisons, high-security facilities). Swing turnstiles are appropriate where some human supervision exists.
  • Swing turnstile vs. tripod turnstile — Swing barriers open fully for ADA/wheelchair access and allow faster throughput in premium environments. Tripod turnstiles are more cost-effective and more durable in industrial settings.
  • Swing turnstile vs. lane drop-arm turnstile — While both swing and lane drop-arm models rely on advanced optical sensor technology, swing turnstiles offer a much stronger physical barrier. Drop-arm turnstiles leave open space underneath the single horizontal bar, creating a vulnerability where an intruder might attempt to crawl through. The flaps on swing turnstiles extend much closer to the ground to completely block the width of the lane and eliminate those gaps.

Installation and Integration
