Security Camera Count & Coverage Planner

How Many Cameras Do I Need?

One of the most common questions facility managers ask: how many cameras do I actually need? This planner calculates the right camera count for your building based on square footage, entry points, and risk zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard HD cameras cover 30-40 feet effectively for identification-quality footage. Wide-angle cameras can cover up to 60 feet for detection. PTZ cameras cover much larger areas but require active monitoring.

Most commercial facilities need both. Outdoor cameras cover perimeter, parking, and entry points. Indoor cameras cover lobbies, hallways, server rooms, and high-value areas.

A high-risk zone—such as a server room, loading dock, or cash vault—requires more than just a single camera. In these areas, we often recommend “Cross-Coverage,” where two cameras view the same point from different angles. This ensures that even if one view is obstructed by a person or a pallet, the other camera maintains a clear line of sight for constant accountability.

The calculator may increase your camera count if you select a higher resolution camera. This is because higher image quality requires a tighter field of view. For instance, to see a plate clearly at 50 feet, the camera must be zoomed in, meaning it covers less physical width than a standard surveillance camera would.
