Selecting the correct explosion proof PTZ camera housing involves more than just matching the physical dimensions. Follow this four-step checklist to ensure you spec the right model for your project:

1. Verify the Hazard Type: Determine exactly what volatile substances are present. Combustible dust (like grain or flour) requires different handling and temperature thresholds than flammable gases (like methane or hydrogen). Check with the facility’s safety engineer to confirm the exact Class, Division, and Group requirements. 2. Calculate Internal Clearances and Motor Load: PTZ cameras require significant physical space. You must ensure the internal dimensions allow the camera block to fully pan, tilt, and extend its optical zoom lens without striking the tempered glass. Additionally, verify that the housing’s internal mounting bracket matches your specific camera’s footprint.
3. Evaluate Power Requirements: Standard fixed cameras can often run on basic PoE. However, powering a high-definition camera, heavy-duty PTZ motors, and the housing’s internal heater and blower simultaneously requires substantial power. Ensure your infrastructure can supply PoE++ (802.3bt) or a dedicated 24VAC power line.
4. Determine Mounting and Vibration Mitigation: Explosion proof PTZ housings constructed from 316L stainless steel are incredibly heavy. You must select specialized, reinforced parapet mounts, corner brackets, or high-mast pole adapters. If installing near heavy machinery, vibration isolation is critical to prevent the high-powered zoom lens from producing shaky, unusable video.
