Why the Ubiquiti UniFi Mosque Installation Was Needed

Unity Islamic Center needed a brand new setup that included reliable networking, modern access control, and comprehensive video surveillance. They ultimately chose the Ubiquiti UniFi ecosystem because they wanted a completely integrated system that their administrators could easily manage from a single interface. A proper Ubiquiti UniFi mosque installation gave them exactly what they were looking for.

Religious centers often have a unique mix of public and private activities. The mosque administrators specifically loved that the UniFi ecosystem would allow them to configure segmented networks on their own. This meant they could create an unsecure, open Wi-Fi network for guests and congregants to use, while keeping a separate, highly secure network strictly for their internal devices and staff operations.

System Architecture

The backbone of this entire Ubiquiti UniFi mosque installation relies on a carefully mapped network of centralized hardware. Here is a look at the system design and how the physical components work together to protect the facility.

The Network Gateway

At the core of the deployment is a UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro). Positioned in the main equipment rack, this gateway serves as the brain of the network. It connects Unity Islamic Center to the outside internet while handling all internal routing, network segmentation, and advanced security protocols required to keep the facility safe from digital threats.

Security Cameras with UniFi Protect Integration

To achieve complete visibility, the floor plan incorporated 32 cameras strategically mapped across the property. Surveillance cameras were needed inside and outside to ensure the safety of congregants, capture incidents, and deter criminal activity. However, it was important that we find the right balance between safety and the comfort of attendees. Compact Dome and Turret cameras were assigned to interior hallways and classrooms for discreet monitoring, while long range Bullet and PTZ cameras were mapped to the exterior perimeter to watch over the parking lots and grounds. All of these cameras feed directly back into the central management system.

Surveillance Storage

Since Unity Islamic Center is a religious center, privacy was a paramount concern. Instead of relying on cloud storage where sensitive footage is hosted off-site, the design included a UniFi Network Video Recorder (UNVR) housed securely alongside the gateway. This piece of hardware ensures all camera footage is recorded locally and kept strictly on the premises.

Switching and Wi-Fi

To link the entire hardware ecosystem together, the architecture relies on a series of UniFi PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches. These supply both power and data to the cameras, door readers, and access points directly through standard Ethernet cables. For connectivity, four Wi-Fi access points were mapped out across the mosque to ensure sufficient wireless coverage for both the staff and the guests.

Door Entry with UniFi Access Integration

The final piece of the architecture is a smart access control setup. G2 Readers and Access Hubs were mapped to sensitive internal doors and the main office to prevent unauthorized access. For the exterior, the plan utilized G2 Reader Pro video intercoms at the main entrances. These are tied into the central network, providing the hardware necessary for administrators to visually identify visitors and unlock doors remotely.

The Installation

From start to finish, the 2M Technology team completed this Ubiquiti UniFi mosque installation project in just three weeks. Our process started with a full week dedicated to consulting with the mosque leadership, drafting the quote, and designing an optimized floor plan. From there, our technicians spent two weeks on site to handle the physical installation and wiring of the hardware.

Here is a breakdown of exactly what we set up:

Comprehensive Video Surveillance

Our team mounted and wired all 32 cameras across the property, routing new Ethernet cables back to the central PoE switches. To ensure congregants can worship freely without feeling heavily monitored, we intentionally mounted the more compact and discreet G5 Dome (UVC-G5-Dome) and G5 Turret Ultra (UVC-G5-Turret-Ultra) models throughout the interior hallways, classrooms, entrances, and exits. On the exterior of the building, we installed the G5 Bullet (UVC-G5-Bullet) and G6 PTZ (UVC-G6-PTZ) models. These provide a much longer range of visibility, allowing administrators to effectively monitor the surrounding perimeter. The PTZ camera offers even more coverage, as it features pre-set movement patterns to routinely scan the property and auto-tracking to follow people or vehicles moving through the area.

Smart Access Control

To secure sensitive internal rooms and the main office, we ran wiring for and installed G2 Readers (UA-G2) paired with Access Hubs (UA-Hub). For the main office, we mounted the Reader Flex (UA-G3-Flex) to allow for quick and reliable entry. Deploying these physical door readers ensures unauthorized individuals are kept out while giving administrators seamless access. This completely eliminates the everyday hassle of fumbling with physical keys or remembering which key unlocks which door.

For the exterior, the mosque features separate entrances for the men’s and women’s prayer areas. At both main entrances, our team wired and mounted G2 Reader Pro (UA-G2-Pro) units connected to Door Hubs (UA-Hub-Door). Because these act as video intercoms, administrators can check a live video stream to identify anyone attempting to enter outside of operating hours and speak with them. If authorized, staff can unlock the door remotely, making it incredibly easy to coordinate entry for package couriers and maintenance crews.

Custom Scheduling and Credentials

Once the hardware installation was complete, we helped the mosque administrators set up custom time schedules for their new video intercoms through the UniFi Access software. The entrance doors now automatically unlock during normal operating hours so attendees can enter freely, and they lock down automatically after hours. This eliminates the need for attendees to wait outside if a designated keyholder is running late.

Interestingly, the mosque initially opted for NFC Pocket Keyfobs (UA-Pocket) for their administrative staff. However, the flimsy design caused the fobs to frequently fall off keychains and get lost. Because the readers were already mounted and active, the staff simply migrated to using secure PIN codes instead, which proved to be much more reliable for day to day use.

Real World Results

The impact of the new Ubiquiti UniFi mosque installation was immediate and profoundly positive for the community. The video intercoms at the main entrances give staff the ability to monitor visitors, speak with them directly, and grant remote entry without ever having to leave the office or be on-site.

Shortly after the installation was completed, the system proved its worth in two major incidents:

  • Protecting Students: After a student reported being bullied inside the facility, administrators quickly pulled the footage from the local UNVR. Upon reviewing the captured evidence, they verified the incident and banned the individual responsible. This swift action heavily reinforced their commitment to keeping the mosque a safe, welcoming space for children.
  • Preventing Theft: Administrators were immediately alerted when one of the exterior video intercoms caught an individual entering the mosque to steal a donation box. Although the thief escaped with some spare change, the high-quality camera hardware captured the evidence needed to successfully identify the person responsible.

“We are extremely pleased with the Ubiquiti UniFi deployment provided by 2M Technology. From the initial design to the final wiring, their team completed the entire installation incredibly quickly and professionally. Our new setup gives us exactly what we were looking for: a facility that is robustly secure, yet wonderfully convenient for our administrative staff to manage from one central interface.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What is Ubiquiti UniFi?

Ubiquiti UniFi is a highly scalable, centrally managed system of networking, security, and communication devices. It allows organizations to control their Wi-Fi, wired networks, security cameras, and door access systems all from one incredibly user-friendly dashboard.

  2. Why do religious centers opt for UniFi systems?

Religious centers, like Unity Center, often operate with limited IT staff. A Ubiquiti UniFi mosque installation provides enterprise-grade security and networking without requiring a full-time IT department to manage it. The lack of recurring licensing fees, the ability to store video locally for privacy, and the seamless integration of cameras and door locks make it highly attractive for nonprofits and places of worship.

  3. Is local storage truly more secure for religious centers?

Yes. By using a UniFi Network Video Recorder (UNVR) directly on the premises, the mosque retains complete ownership and physical control over its security footage. Because the video data is not hosted on a third party cloud server, the risk of external data breaches is significantly reduced. This local storage approach is a crucial step in protecting the privacy of the congregation.
